Dr. Homayoun Najjaran

Professor

School of Engineering

Faculty of Applied Science

Dr. Najjaran received his Ph.D. from the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Toronto in 2002. From 1999 to 2002, he worked as a Research Assistant in the Robotics and Automation Laboratory at the University of Toronto, and a Senior Consultant for Engineering Services Inc., Toronto, Canada, where his work mainly focused on the development of hardware and software of robotic and automation systems. From 2003 to 2006, he worked as a Research Officer at the National Research Council Canada where his research focused on the development of robotic systems and sensor technologies. He joined the Okanagan School of Engineering at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in May 2006.

Dr. Najjaran is the founder of the Advanced Control and Intelligent Systems (ACIS) Laboratory at the School of Engineering. His research focuses on the analysis and design of advanced control systems in a variety of applications ranging from service and humanoid robots to digital microfluidic systems.

Dr. Najjaran’s expertise in broader areas of mechatronics and control systems has led to his interests in several leading edge research applications including:

  • Autonomous robotic systems including SLAM, vSLAM, multiagent systems, and visual servoing with an emphasis on the applications relevent to dynamic environments
  • MEMS particularly digital microfluidic devices for lab-on-chip applications
  • Soft computing with applications in expert systems, nontraditional modeling, sensor fusion and uncertainty management
